The Trump administration is working to turn America into an authoritarian regime. Trump and his sycophants are attacking the Constitution and the rule of law, destroying our government institutions and committing crimes – including murder – against American citizens and immigrants alike. Our democracy demands accountability for those who break the law. Everyone is (or should be) equal before the law, including the rich, powerful and politically connected. Our peace and security require that the United States follow international law and that both our military and its civilian leadership, be held accountable for actions they commit or order that violate the Geneva Convention, international, or domestic law.
In Congress, I will work to remove the qualified immunity enjoyed by ICE and other law enforcement agents, and to strengthen criminal and civil laws against harmful and corrupt actions by government officials. I will work to strengthen laws criminalizing the issuing of orders to commit war crimes or crimes against humanity and I will work to conduct congressional hearings on our military’s compliance with international humanitarian law and domestic laws. I will also introduce legislation mandating the extradition of anyone indicted by the International Criminal Court.
I will call for Congressional hearings to investigate the crimes committed by the Trump administration, identify those responsible, and refer them for criminal prosecution when that becomes possible. I will work on legislation to get around the likely promise of the Trump administration to its officials of pardoning them for any crimes they commit.
I will be equally vigilant of the actions of any future administration, whether Republican and Democratic.
